R&F pigment sticks are a revolutionary development in the oil painting community! They have the shape and body of oil pastels with all the artistic properties of traditional oil paints; they’re essentially oil paints in a more solid form! Giving you the freedom to make marks with control and precision. Get ready to establish composition and structures in your oil paintings with an expressive and intuitive feel!
These oil sticks are made with all the same ingredients as regular oil paints, but are encased with an all natural beeswax coating. They contain just enough wax to maintain the stick’s solid form, without affecting its smooth, creamy, “lipstick-like” consistency! Feel free to use and apply these paints to all the same surfaces you’d use with regular oil paints! You can even use them with the same mediums and techniques as you would with regular oils!
To get started, all you need to do is wipe away the wax coating on the stick to easily access the paint underneath. Once you have, you can start applying the paint to your surface! Gently pressing the pigment stick to your surface will allow you to create delicate, fine lines. On the other hand, you can press the stick firmly onto your surface to create a thick paste-like consistency, perfect for impasto paintings! Use a brush, molding tool, palette knife, or even your gloved hands to manipulate the paint however you please!
But what if you want to use these sticks with other art mediums? Well, you absolutely can! These oil sticks can easily be layered on top of just about any medium to create a fun mixed media piece. Use them over thinned oil paint, matte acrylics, gouaches, watercolors, and even oil based colored pencils! But, just remember, these are still oil paints! Like with regular tubed oil paints, these R&F pigment sticks will take at least 3 days to be touch dry (depending on how thick the paint is applied). And as with tubed oils, it’s not recommended to paint acrylics on top of oils!
Truly, R&F pigment sticks are a game changer for any oil artist looking to expand their oil collection! You can easily use these sticks to create gestural marks, and can even cover a large surface area with half the use of paint! If you’re an oil painter looking for a fun new product to get your hands on, then you definitely need to try these! Stop by our Phoenix store and grab yourself a stick or two, or even a set, from the 102 vibrant color options and get to experimenting with this one of a kind product!

How long does it take for the oil sticks to dry?
Kat
Hi, Michelle! From my understanding, the R&F oil pigment sticks react like normal oil paints. So dry time may vary from a day or two to a full month; R&F themselves states, “drying times are affected by a number of factors including: how thickly the paint is applied, the absorbency of the surface, the ambient temperature, exposure to light, and even the surrounding colors”.
