Gelly Rolls by far and large are one of our most sought after products, and for good reason too! They’re super opaque gel pens that can write smoothly and clearly, even on black paper! Not to mention that they come in various sizes and a variety of unique, vibrant, colors including pearlescents and metallics! But even for all their strengths it’s hard to fully ignore their biggest weakness. And that’s the fact that they are notorious for going out rather quickly.
But, did you know you can attempt a rescue! This video from Sakura gives you some tips on how to revive a seemingly dead Gelly Roll: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sNNfyUFtm0Q.
Although this can work on some occasions (such as with the Metallic and Stardust pens which tend to have an easier time clogging due to the glitter inside), it’s always good to know when exactly to toss any dead pens. Typically when there is no more ink visibly inside the barrel, then it’s safe to assume you can toss it. If there is ink visible inside the barrel, but it’s not writing even after trying the tip provided by Sakura, then try using a more textured paper.
If the pen still isn’t working after a few scribbles, then try a different type of paper! For example, watercolor and drawing paper have a more defined texture to them than printer or sketch paper. More often than not, the smoother surfaced papers tend to prevent the ball from rolling, and thus preventing the gel from flowing. On the other hand, textured papers tend to have an easier time moving the ball and revitalizing the pen!
